To all who love Symphony Music:
Welcome to the 2010-2011 season of the Eureka
Symphony. As you will note, Carol Jacobson, our
Music Director and Conductor, has another exciting
program of concerts for us this year including an
original work, Earthquake Symphony, by our former
Concertmaster, Halim Beere. We hope you will enjoy
it and the selection of music and soloists for this
season. We encourage you to purchase season tickets
that provide you with a discount and enable you to
enjoy the season from your favorite seat in the house.
On the social side, we will be having our Second
Annual Opening Night Gala dinner and auction at
the Avalon restaurant on Friday, October 22. Meet
our composer, Carol, the Board and some orchestra
members before our first concert. Seating is limited,
so call me, 822-4550, for tickets right away.
We are also excited to announce a special Holiday
Concert of an abbreviated presentation of Handel’s
Messiah by the Symphony, soloists and a chorus of
angelic local voices. This is not part of our season
ticket performances, but we know you will enjoy the
presentation on the first weekend of December.
Remember to encourage young musicians you know
to audition for our Youth Concert Opportunity Awards.
The auditions are in November. These awards allow
them to play with the Orchestra during our Youth
Concert series as well as obtain a scholarship to help
them with their music studies.
We look forward to seeing you this year at all our
exciting concert season productions.
Sincerely,
Pamela Cahill, President

Our orchestra players come from all over Humboldt County. Many of them have studios and provide lessons for our youth and upcoming musicians. They have a variety of experiences and volunteer their time to bring us the music that they love. Interested in playing? Please contact the Symphony Board for information.

Over fifteen years ago an enthusiastic group of local musicians was organized by Patricia Person to play under the baton of Kenneth Hannaford for performances of Johannes Brahms’ Requiem (June, 1991). The Eureka Symphony Orchestra was created through the energy and dedication from Ken and Pat. The first concert was an all-Mozart program featuring Deborah Clasquin, pianist, in Concerto No. 25. Marianne Pinches served as concertmaster for the first six years. Betty Bliss was concertmaster from 1997 to 2006. Terrie Baune steps in as concertmaster this season.
Following Hannaford’s untimely death, the Symphony continued under the leadership of Valgene Phillips (1996-1998), Kenneth Ayoob (1998-2002) and has grown in size and stature under current conductor Carol Jacobson (2003-present). Past performance venues have included Christ Episcopal Church, Eureka High School, First Congregational Church and the First Assembly of God Church. Last winter, the Symphony held its first concert in the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts where the Symphony, the audience and the music were transformed. The Eureka Symphony is now a Community Partner with the Arkley Center for the Performing Arts and receives support and assistance from the Center in presenting its concert series.
Highlights of past performances are: Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Brahms’ Requiem, the Gaelic Symphony in E minor by Amy Beach, Richard Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder with soprano Diane O’Sullivan, Carmen Fantasy by Francis Bourne, featuring flutist Jill Petricca and Mendelssohn’s E-minor Violin Concerto with Susan Hytken.
Since the mid-nineties, the Eureka Symphony has offered annual Young People’s Concerts featuring local student musicians as soloists. Auditioning in November, the winners will perform in a special pair of concerts on February 4 and 5.
The success of our Symphony is assured into the future with the outstanding guidance of its Board of Directors and the generous support of this community.
